WRDTC Welcome Event 2016

December 1, 2016

On 6 October 2016 over 300 new doctoral researchers from the University of Leeds, York and Sheffield came together at the White Rose DTC Welcome Event at The Ron Cooke Hub, University of York, for a lively day of networking.

White Rose 10 16 06This was the first of the WRDTC events and conferences in 2016/17 for social scientists doctoral researchers and forms part of a wide range of training events and courses offered to our post graduate research community.

The day began with a warm welcome from the WRDTC Director, Professor Martin Jones, and a talk from Neil Lunt and Laura Bainbridge, showcasing the work of the Social Policy Pathway.

Then Kirstyn Radford, Research Support Librarian and Copyright Advisor at the University of York, talked about Sharing Access, Information and Skills across the White Rose universities.

After the coffee break, a session titled ‘My experiences as a Doctoral Researcher’, which proved very popular with our new researchers, focused on the personal experiences of some of our current PhD students:

During the lunch break time was set aside for networking and viewing the student Poster Exhibition entries.  Over 20 students displayed a poster and Jed Meers was the popular choice and awarded the £50 book voucher prize for the best poster on the day.

After the Pathway meetings, where new students discussed their ideas for future events, training and how to build a dynamic research network in their disciplines, the day was rounded off with an afternoon tea.

We really enjoyed welcoming you to the DTC social sciences research community and are already looking forward to our next major event WRDTC Summer Conference 29 June 2016 (University of Sheffield).
