Public Engagement in Practice – a two-day training programme for PGRs in the social sciences, 22 and 29 April 2015, University of York

Public engagement – communicating your research to, and sharing your research with people outside academia – is an increasingly important aspect of academic life.

This two-day, White Rose event will give participants the opportunity to work with researchers from York, Sheffield and Leeds, and to receive mentoring and expert advice about public engagement from White Rose academics. Working in interdisciplinary, cross-institutional teams, participants will be supported to develop public engagement ideas to bring to life the RCUK’s six priorities.

Over the course of this public engagement programme, participants will:

  • build networks and collaborate across other disciplines and institutions
  • gain experience of interdisciplinary working and learn the skills required for effective public engagement
  • understand more about where your research fits into the social sciences and  develop synergies with other researchers
  • have the opportunity to pitch for funding of up to £800 to develop and deliver a PE activity
  • learn more about the importance of evaluation, and be supported to evaluate their public engagement work

Successful teams will be supported to take part in the Festival of Social Science in November 2015, and to apply for further funding of up to £2000 from ESRC in order to do this.
