WRDTC Pathway Collaborators Club Scheme

The White Rose DTC Collaborative Innovation & Service Club, part of the Management and Business, Accounting and Finance, and Work Psychology pathway aspires to provide a platform for the co-production of knowledge in the field of management and business by fostering close collaboration between doctoral students, practicing managers from small and large for-profit and non-for-profit organizations and academic researchers.

The Collaborative Innovation & Service Club is dedicated to enhance the experience and competency of doctoral students by creating a unique learning environment that explores challenges of equal interest for academic researchers and practicing managers.

Principles of Collaboration:
All members of this Collaborative Club share a belief that high impact research is achieved by collaboration between management practitioners and academic researchers. Such collaboration is sustained throughout the entire research process. The research topics are identified in close collaboration between doctoral researchers, their academic supervisors and non-academic partners.

Research Focus:
Organizations of different sizes, ages and sectors constantly deal with novelty. The members of the Collaborative Innovation & Service Club all share an interest in exploring social and organizational processes that lead to novel strategies, business ventures, services, products, organizational forms and work practices.

Strategic competency:
The Collaborative Innovation & Service Club builds on the existing research strengths of Leeds University Business School, Management School at the University of Sheffield and The York Management School. All three schools are dedicated to increasing the impact of their research and in engaging with businesses, professional associations and community organizations.

LUBS has recently established a Professional Service Sector Research and Innovation Hub that engages closely with professional services to achieve impact of research. LUBS is also leading a large EU training network that closely engages with industrial partner organizations to deliver doctoral training. Sheffield University Management School has a strategy to foster impactful research collaborations for both staff and students through a Business Engagement Team, fostering partnerships with local, regional and international business across the manufacturing, service, government and public service industries. TYMS has held several knowledge transfer partnerships related to the doctoral programme, including working with the North Yorkshire Police. In 2013, TYMS has established the new White Rose Employee Ownership Centre, bringing together academics, practitioners from employee-owned companies, and employee ownership experts from government and professional organisations.


  • To establish a highly motivated group of external, non-academic partners who together are committed to collaboratively produce knowledge that fuses academic rigour with practical relevance.
  • To develop lasting, strategic and innovative arrangements for business, professional associations and community sector engagement into doctoral training.
  • To develop collaborative capabilities to enable continuous bidding for Collaborative Awards and other research grants.
  • To develop opportunities for internships, secondments and placements that will increase the mobility between business, academic and non-for-profit organizations.
  • To organize events that increase the competency of those staff and students who are pursuing engaged approaches to scholarship.
  • To create opportunities for sponsoring doctoral students.
  • To report research findings through insight-building events, publications and newsletters.
